About book Nepopsatelní (2014)

I look forward to new Cherie Priest novels ever since I first picked up 'Dreadnought' off my local library 'new books' shelf. This one, however, did not rock my boat. Maybe it was an attempt to appeal to a teen audience, but as in many books written for young readers, the teenage main character is written in such a way as to represent real teen behavior. I know that this approach led to much success in series such as Harry Potter and The Hunger Games series, but as an adult reader, nothing is more banal and boring to read than a teenager acting like a typical teenager. Rector (the main character) is moody, competive, disagreeable, and just plain dull most of the time. His interactions with the other characters known from previous books in the Clockwork Century series add nothing to those other characters' development, and they are the ones that fans of the series would be most interested in, in my opinion. Plus, the titular inexplicables make up only a minor part of the novel's events, and overall, not a whole heck of a lot happens in the course of this story. All-in-all, I found this entry in the series to be rather dull. But to Cherie Priest's credit, it's not going to stop me from reading any of her other works to come; she has built up more than enough credit with me to let this one slide. Another extremely fun romp with an interesting lead character -- in this case, a drug addict, orphan, looking to figure out what it's going to mean to be an adult instead of a kid.The usual chase scene and exciting battle scene gets a little less exciting after having read them in all the other books in the series. There's definitely some mystery building as a slower longer thread through all the books, so I look forward to seeing how that resolves.I'd definitely describe this book as fun and good but not great -- a good travel book, worth a read but not worth reading a second time.

Blah. I might have to give up this series after this one...

Not nearly as good as her earlier books in the same series.
