Overall, the book felt like a first draft. Characters didn't feel right, actions didn't mesh with characterization, flow through felt unbalanced. The setting is interesting, but it wasn't exploited. Things could have been easily renamed to make it fantasy, sci-fi, etc., with little change. It could have been a lot of fun, but that would have required going back over the novel, then discovering and polishing its core.As an aside, there have also been tendencies for populist authors to bring up gender issues, perhaps thinking this makes them more significant, but in genre fiction this has sometimes been in shallow or already well trafficked ways. No spoilers, but in the relevant scene towards the end, it doesn't make any sense given the fashions of the day, nor is it dealt with except as a throwaway aside. That was a really fun book. Not a great book, but a fun one. The new major character was pretty nifty; the unspoken backstory (some of which later gets spoken) makes for a good setup; and the development of the overall broad storyline and references to characters from previous books are satisfying.Anyway, if you're looking for deep thoughts, this isn't your book, but if you're looking for a super-fun steampunk zombie romp, go for it! well, not so much zombies, a little more civil war here, but enough zombies to keep the appetite whetted.Great New Orleans setting here, too, though I look forward to the next book which I think is back to the Seattle setting.
