About book My Life Next Door (2012)

Woah. I'm having so many mixed feelings about this. On one hand I enjoyed the book, on the other I feel as if I've just been handed a cliffhanger. This book isn't great in the big way, with metaphors and complex language and intense characters, but it's nice is its own way. And the thing is, it sticks. First up, there's one huge reason to love this book: it's not your typical romance novel. No horny teenagers as protagonists; no stupid decisions and immaturity; no flowery language. The characters are portrayed with originality and depth, and the issues all of them deal with are very realistically portrayed. Never once do you feel like scoffing at their situations because the emotions, the words... Everything feels so real. Reading this book is like taking a breather. It's refreshing and pleasant. The author doesn't overdo the relationship between Jase and Sam; and through her writing I see the formation of a relationship built on a foundation of trust and mutual understanding, rather than sex, lust and desire. This is exactly what I love about the book: no unrealistic expectations are set. It's real, it's awkward, and it's bumpy. That's exactly how relationships work in real life. Not every day's a fairytale, and the author makes sure to include the minute details, which I appreciate. Jase and Sam have something special going there ^_^What does frustrate me to no end, though is in fact the over-maturity of Sam. She's so... Ugh. If I had a mum like that I'd totally blow, but she's... Calm, collected, and so understanding. This is what I'd call a role model. I absolutely love her character, but I'm also very jealous in some way.... :p I just can't get over how damn mature she is. And I really wish I'm like that. Also, the ending. ARGH. Too rushed, too many loose ends not tied up. Kinda like someone just decided to skip out on the epilogue. But I guess it does, in a way, contribute to the realism of the book. Which is definitely one of the strong points of My Life Next Door. Conclusion: I love it. Not in the wow, mindblowing way, but more like feeling this affection growing for the characters. 5 stars all the way ;) If you are a sucker for young love and perfect boys, this one is definitely a keeper. As much as I loved hero, Jase- and I do love Jase- he is the perfect boy, but I think my favorite character was actually Tim. I loved the way this novel had a slow build that kept you interested and had a quick, yet satisfying ending. My only wish is that the author could have tied together the loose ends with Nan.
