About book My First Day (2013)

Genre: InformationalAnnotation: The first day of life is different for every animal. Human newborns don’t do much at all, but some animals hit the ground running. The Caldecott Honor–winning team Steve Jenkins and Robin Page apply their considerable talents to revealing how twenty two different species, from the emperor penguin to the Siberian tiger, adapt to that traumatic first few hours of life, with or without parental help. Jenkins’s vividly colorful cut-paper illustrations are eye-poppingly three-dimensional and as exquisite as ever. While the text is short and sweet, an illustrated guide provides descriptions of the twenty two animals in the back.Themes: baby animals, new life, birth, nature, science, non-fictionWays to Use: researching animals, comparing non-fiction to fiction books on animals, comparing baby animals to human babies, analyzing illustrations This is a GREAT book and will definitely be one of the books we give as a gift. Not only does the book tell us about the first day of life - including skill sets etc- of many familiar animals, but it also presents some more rare species. As a bonus, there is a little appendix that gives you greater detail on each animal. Wonderfully done. Interestingly the cover leaves a bit to be desired and is not as likely to be plucked off a shelf by a child.

Fascinating look at the first day of many animals and one insect. Extra information is at the back.

Another stunning book with Steve Jenkins at the helm. Simple and perfectly executed.

I like that the animals portrayed are unusual/unfamiliar to most US readers.
