Unfortunately, the holidays are rather spoiled by a beastly little man and his news that something sinister is lurking at the limits of Known Space. So in the Spirit of Adventure, Art, Myrtle, and parents set off to discover the secret of the dark cloud at the edge of the universe, and perhaps the fate of a missionary and his daughter who were in the vicinity and have gone missing.Mothstorm doesn't miss a beat with its wacky, improbable adventures that yet again pit Art and Myrtle against an evil that threatens the whole universe, a host of new alien species, and a runaway Christmas pudding (whose illustrated death-by-flamethrower was one priceless moment among many in the book). Despite Art and Myrtle still passionately hating each other, they work together in a way only siblings can, accompanied by the whole crew of the Sophronia and some old friends and new.The book delves into some of the mysteries left untouched by previous books, stories of the far distant past and the more recent ages. One of the really nice things was finally finding out more about Ssilissa. Her story was a perfect blend of bittersweet, whose weighty beginning balances out against a fairy-tale ending.One odd mistake I noticed was that during the invasion of Scotland, Mr Mumby speaks as though Ssilissa is standing there with them, when she has been missing for quite a while. It looks like something that just slipped past an editor, though it left me rather confused for a while trying to figure out if Ssilissa had somehow slipped in among the fray and I just hadn't noticed.Overall Mothstorm stands equal to Larklight and Starcross, making a fine cap on the series (though hopefully it will one day extend beyond a trilogy). The book continues to be a laugh a minute, though flavored with a bit more weightiness than either of the previous. I rate this book Highly Recommended. (Genre:Children's fiction/fantasy) Huzzah! The third and final installment in the series, very fun and essentially just like the other 2 adventures--humor and high adventure in British controlled Victorian space! In this adventure, the Mumby family is off to Uranus (or Georgium Sidus) to investigate a distress signal sent by a friend of Mr. Mumby. They discover a powerful enemy that is threatening the universe (of course) that must be stopped. Former space pirate Jack Havock and his crew are also here to aid in the adventure. An entertaining series for children, my 6th grader son has really enjoyed these books.
