My favorite of Meredith Duran's. I really enjoyed Lydia and her headstrong, willfully blind tendencies. She is guileless and spends much time feeling ashamed because she doesn't really fit in, and as a woman this discounts her in society. Then you have James, the caddish Viscount who cares little for society rules, to a greater degree than Lydia, but is considered stylish and popular, in spite of this. I enjoyed the very direct way this disparity was called out. I also enjoyed how Lydia and James interacted as people, not always adhering to societal standards. Because both of them are a bit rogue, and Lydia in particular is a strong, intelligent woman (not at all stylish in that time), I connected more to this story than to other historical romances. I think it might be my favorite Meredith Duran to date. And I loved all the others, but this one, this one was just brilliant. Lydia is an amazing, strong, character. And despite his devil-may-care attitude, James feels very deeply and it's shown almost from the start.Both Lydia and James wore deep emotional scars, and both had issues with their families and they both need help, they both equally need the other. They really are better together. The relationship is really one of equals, it's not about a rake needing to be rehabilitated or about a bookish spinster needing to be awaken. They are so much more complex than that.The scene on the roof was maybe my favorite. It was simply beautiful. Though I really liked the scene were she finally comes to him. Yes. And the end was perfect. Spot on perfect, it couldn't have been better. I began reading it last night because I needed cheering up, and I read this morning. Then work, and all day I thought about it, about how I needed to read it, to finish it. And I love to see Phin and Mina also. I need to read Written on your skin again, I didn't remember Mina meeting a strange woman, and now I know who she is...
