About book Lost In The River Of Grass (2011)

3.5 stars; Truman nominee 2013-4. Two teenagers from different backgrounds find themselves lost in the Floria Everglades for five days. Although compelling at times, the characters occasionally flatten and their actions are sometimes hard to believe...but the plot is compelling and makes the reader plod on. Nothing earth shattering here, but a decent book. Also, the mention of marijuana in the book will make me proceed with caution when recommending it to my sixth grade readers. Sarah is having a tough time fitting in at her new school. She stands out because she is attending on a swimming scholarship not because her parents are wealthy. The field trip to the Everglades might be just the thing to earn her some friends. Unfortunately that might just be wishful thinking.Playing hooky to go for an airboat ride with an Everglades native that she just met, Andy, also seems like a good idea. That is until their airboat sinks trapping them ten miles deep in one of the most dangerous places in the country. Does Sarah have the guts to make it out? Can she trust Andy's knowledge of his environment to keep them safe? This book would appeal to guys and girls. There is a lot of action with a small side of romance and teen self-discovery. The reader is learning huge amounts about the Everglades without realizing it. The character of Sarah starts off being likeable before growing beyond annoying then redeeming herself. It is a great text to show round character.
