Finally, Janzen has the breathing room (400 pages as opposed to her usual scant 300) to get the job done. This is a very satisfying romance with a very satisfying suspense plot. Esme is a tough girl without being a generic "warrior princess" type - she has a lot to learn, but she's a good PI and isn't afraid to draw her .45. Her back story, of a father who is good at heart but fails at parenting due to his gambling problem, was totally believable. I'd put her up there with Honey in terms of Janzen heroines. Johnny Ramos is another solid character, and we get to see him going from tough to bowled over and back again, instead of just being told what a badass he is. I also like the way Janzen reveals the bad guy, Franklin Bleak. The reader always knows he's the bad guy, but the physical reveal at the end of the book puts a nice cap on his previous scenes, which are mostly phone conversations with his henchmen.Janzen also sets up her end game for the series in this book, and I can't wait to see how the team moves forward in the next book.Can we talk about that cover for a second, though? I know that authors don't get to choose covers, and Janzen's have always been a little cheesy. But this looks like the love story of the two most boring accountants in the world. That is a truly hideous cover that does the book no justice. Another winner. This one was fast-paced and funny all book long. Johnny and Esme are so sweet! (Even tough the sex scene is not one of Janzen's best.)They will encounter Baby Duce's gang (We met him in book 4) and an old man wearing a robe (I couldn't help but think about Hugh Heffner even tough this character is not a dirty old man.) I liked that Esme's mother is not a cry-baby. We're introduced to Dax Killian and he is the funniest character of the whole Steele Street series. I can't wait for the next one when he'll meet Suzi Toussi all over again.I liked the short-part of the story when we learn that Hawkins is gonna be a daddy for the fourth time and that he is the resident therapist of Steele Street.
