About book Listen To The Wind: The Story Of Dr. Greg & Three Cups Of Tea (2009)

This story is about the real life adventures of the author of Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson, and how he brought a school to the remote village of Korphe in Pakistan. While the story is powerful as it is about a community coming together to achieve a goal, I would have liked to see more of the feelings of the people and Mr. Mortenson come through in the story. I wanted the story to tell more of the friendship between the community and Mr. Mortenson and how building a school together changed both the community and Mr. Mortenson. I felt the story telling was rather flat, and I wanted more from such an amazing real life story that tells so much about two different cultures with the same compassion for humanity. The book is multicultural as the reader learns about another part of the world in Pakistan. The story is not only about how the community of Korphe comes together to build a school but also gives the reader a glimpse of the traditions, appearance, and activities of Balti people. It is also a true account of a wonderful relationship between two very different cultures and how differences do not matter in friendship. I would use this book as an example of friendship when teaching young kindergarten or first grade students. As this is a time when these ages discuss themselves and their community in learning, this book would be a great example of how friendship can be formed between through difference. I would also use this book in art as the collages in this book are beautiful and colorful. It is a shame that this wonderful book is the result of work by Greg Mortenson who has been embroiled in a fraudulent scandal. The book recounts his encounter with a poor Pakistan village who nursed him back to health. In return, Mortenson built them a new school and went on to found a nonprofilt organization to build schools in other countries. Since this book has been published, it has been revealed that he made up the incident and has used the funds of his nonprofit as a personal piggybank. Despite this, the book is beautiful, especially the collages by Susan L. Roth. For that alone, it is worth reading!
