I've been reading a lot of romance novels lately -- and this was one of the best historical romances I've read in a long time. I even got up early to keep reading it which is quite a rarity.I was really impressed with Burrowes' writing. A lot of historical's are very similar, down to the same old overused plot lines and vernacular of the day but Burrowes' book is different. The plot is unusual and the seduction scenes are both well written and hot. It was a pleasant change of pace. Lady Maggie's Secret Scandal stands out among many other historical romance novels and I strongly recommend it. If you are a fan of historical romances where the female is a spinster and doesn't want to get married but ends up succumbing then this is the book for you. Lady Maggie has someone who is blackmailing her so she feels it is best to keep a low profile and remain single so that her husband doesn't become involved. However, she hires Hazlit to search for her missing reticule which has some important papers in it that could incriminate her and her family. Hazlit knows there is something besides the bag that is of importance, and eventually he gets it out of Maggie at the end. Her biological mother is blackmailing her that she will go public with who her sister is and ruin her family name once again. In the end, Hazlit, Maggie, her family and the help of others help to get Bridget (maggie's sister)free from their mother. In the process, of course they fall for each other and Maggie tries to resist but she is eventually one over and must give in to loving Hazlit.
