About book La Vida Con Mr. Dangerous (2011)

With a similar clean cut to Clowes, Hornschemeier presents small slices of the life of Amy as she searches for purpose and happiness. Occasional lapses into dreamland highlight the clear lens the artist focuses on the hapless protagonist who endures the confusion, frustration, humiliation and occasional glorious moments of her later twenties. The last section of the book are worth the read. Suggested for fans of realistic fiction. Reviews Detail:Booklist Reviews Like many of her twentysomething peers, Amy, the protagonist of Hornschemeier's latest graphic novel, is mired in a dead-end retail job. A recent breakup with her boyfriend, concluding the latest in a series of failed relationships, has left her romantically gun-shy; her best friend, Michael, has moved to San Francisco; she's given up making art; and she fears winding up like her mother, a middle-aged woman who, after her divorce, is stuck working in a clothing store just like Amy. She avoids confronting her bleak situation by staying home with her cat and watching an absurdist cartoon show, Mr. Dangerous. Hornschemeier's covering much the same territory that's been mined thoroughly by Adrian Tomine, but, refreshingly, he does it without resorting to the cynicism that came to dominate Tomine's work. If this book lacks the poignancy of Hornschemeier's 2003 breakthrough, Mother Come Home, and the formal audacity of The Three Paradoxes (2006), it nonetheless evinces his other strengths: a bold graphic clarity, a graceful narrative confidence, and an abiding humanistic compassion for his vulnerable, sympathetic characters.
