This book gave me exactly what I seek when I read a Historical Romance / Bodice Wripper. There were gothic elements as well as suspense. What made this book a 5 star was that the suspense wasn't just surrounding the romance, but also surrounding the mystery of how the ghost died, Anne's life before becoming the Housekeeper and where was the treasure. I base my rating on other Historical Romance books that are the typical paperback bodice wrippers that you find in the "Romance" section of the library, usually in the corner where I self-consciously peruse while looking over my shoulder......I look forward to reading another Teresa Medeiros novel and continuing on my Bodice Wropper binge! I loved this book! What I loved most was that it gave me this sense of the gothic that one would find in the old gothic stories. Teresa is an amazing storyteller - I usually walk away cheering for her because it was another good one!Anne Spencer is the housekeeper for Cadgwyck Manor and has seen owners come and go, or in a few cases die. She has no interest in serving one more bossy, overbearing master, and Anne and her 'staff' have their own agenda. Having a master around only hinders them from accomplishing what they are trying to do. But they have a few plans up their sleeve, plans that have been successful in the removal of previous masters.Maximillian Burke, is suffering from a broken heart. He had been jilted by his fiance when she left him for his brother at the altar. He'd always been the responsible one among his brothers, but his suffering leads him from the life of a gentleman to the life of a rougue. He decides to leave London for a new estate, wanting to take his mind and heart off of his pain, only to find Mrs. Spencer and her band of miscreants. And they do in fact take his mind off his pain and lead him on a whole other path he never would expect.

Meh. I remember her being funnier. The mystery was good (even if I called it 50 pages in).
