This was the right read for the tail end of a winter vacation: fairly fast paced, mostly mindless, one or two twists that managed to be surprising because I didn't spend a lot of time thinking while I read. I didn't like Cogan's character from the start, and so it was hard to have sympathy (read: to care) when his career begins to crumble. Kristin and Carrie are poorly developed, so what happens to them wasn't particularly compelling. Carnoy seemed to put the most of his imagination into Jim and Watkins, but the sketches are one-dimensional. Watkins is getting on Jim's nerves 3/4 of the way through the novel, and Jim comments that he has to take his final exams. He must. At no other point in the story is the fact that these are college students even remotely explored, and so sudden mentions of exams feel just like that: sudden and transitory. I don't plan to read another book by this author unless it comes highly recommended, but that isn't to say it didn't pass the time on a snowy Tuesday afternoon!
Do You like book Knife Music (2000)?
"why" is intellectual. "why not" is impulsive. and poor judgement is 90% impulsive

It was an engaging mystery. Not very probable but I wanted to keep reading.
