About book Kleine Vogelkunde Ostafrikas (2010)

A very easy, light and comical little read. Set in Kenya, Mr Milak, a short, balding, brown man with a comb-over, attends the Tuesday bird watching group, where he secretly admires, group leader Rose, from a far. Mr Milak is a man of principles; honest, as the day is long. For this he is known. When the annual Hunt Club Ball creeps forward, Mr Milak musters his courage and orders two tickets, one he hopes will be accepted, via written invitation by Rose. Enter Harry Khan.Harry Khan is a brash and charismatic fellow who tends to always get what he wants. Once a school fellow of "Jack" Milak, as Harry once called him, Mr Milak had born the brunt of many a Harry led prank and mirthful, unfortunate circumstance. It goes without saying, that Mr Milak was not too thrilled to see Harry's face at the Tuesday bird watching club, nor later that day at Milak's beloved Akira Club, while sharing a drink and tallying betting scores with the lads. When Harry announces his intention to call Rose to invite her to the fore-mentioned ball, Milak objects and things start to get interesting. A bet is proposed, for the honor of asking the lady to the ball, so as not to place her in an awkward situation. The winner requiring to record the most sighted new species of birds. With a long list of rules, set it stone, they have a week. Exceptionally well written and enjoyable to read. The ending is satisfying as are various moments in the book. The last sentence in the book - delightfully fitting. A leisurely joy to read. When I began this book I was having trouble getting lost in it. I kept thinking that for such a short book it sure was taking a while to get through. However after getting a quarter of the way through I found myself finally there. The plot finally took an interesting turn and the new learned information about the main character gave him enough depth I that finally liked him. I believe this is a book I would be happy to read again. As a side note, I loved the cover of this book so much that I would buy it just for that reason. A great, quick read.
