About book Guida Agli Uccelli Dell'africa Orientale (2009)
Though not particularly deep, this book has a light, slightly tongue-in-cheek sense of humor and manages to use the plot device of two men competing over an unwitting woman in a way that didn't cause me to incinerate the pages with my hatred, as I normally would. A good grasp of the peculiarities of birders enhances the text. I must confess to being on the fence about the several nods to the social and political issues facing modern-day Kenya, as some of them are rather left hanging. Gradually, little by little, you come to know and love Mr. Malik, just as you would if you'd met him in person. Likewise, you gradually come to see his world of Nairobi--a place I've never visited. I love a book that introduces me into a part of the world I haven't experienced, and this book places me down in present day Nairobi, with its contrast of modernity and poverty, violence and peacefulness along with a undertone of racial conflict. But the book doesn't focus on that. It is a sweet little story about a sweet little old man who has a crush on the curator to the East African Ornithological Society (that means bird watching). Warning, there is a LOT of bird watching going on, and since I have no interest in bird descriptions, I did skim a little here and there. But the story was worth the skimming, and the twist at the end was surprising and in line with the Mr. Malik I'd come to admire.
