This was an entertaining, well-conceived and well-executed mystery. I did guess whodunit before the end, but it wasn't obvious. The key to this novel was coming up with an accurate profile of the killer -- and I had a sense about it alongside Lucy, whose lack of confidence kept her from sharing (either with the lead investigator or the reader). There was a bit of romance in here, but that's not what kept me turning pages. I liked Lucy as a character, but I did feel like she had a lot of backstory I was missing out on -- like maybe I should have read the first book in the series? I'm not sure. I wanted to know a lot more about her being kidnapped 7 years ago, in particular. Without a more complete sense of who she was, I thought the romance was just kind of meh. I do recommend to mystery lovers! A pleasure to return to a straightforward police procedural. Lucy gets to stretch her profiler wings and the self doubt/FBI rejection came across really well. The serial killer storyline was entertaining and allowed the reader to play sleuth alongside the investigators. Suzanne "mad dog" Madeaux is an interesting FBI agent that could use some more character development in future books. She comes across as gruff and no nonsense but has a vulnerable backstory I hope we see explored. I thought Panetta was a bit too stereotype narrow minded cop but after years of another police procedural series ;) I do set my cop standards pretty high.Good read.
