About book Justin And The Best Biscuits In The World (1990)

Yet again, another book that I read when i was young. And no, I didn't like reading this book either. This book reigns number one and probably forever will remain there, as the most hated book i've ever read my entire life. It was pointless and the biggest waste of my time. I've never shed so many tears over a book. It was utter torture!!! There was no learning to be accomplished by this book and my class didn't talk about it because there was nothing to discuss! The book was probably just to be read for fun. Yes, well, it wasn't fun at all! It was ridiculous! My mother knows how much i hated that book and we still pick fun at the book to this day! We were forced to read this by school so of course i hated this book. I say that any book that school makes you read you will hate just because you are being forced to. I hated this book. Although, i was young and didn't like reading... so who knows. But, i still have this book under my...school-forced-to-read-books-that-i-hate-and-will-be-haunted-by-for-the-rest-of-my-life-and-that-leave-such-a-bad-taste-in-my-mouth-and-such-a-depressing-feeling-in-me-to-know-that-i-wasted-time-reading-this-awful-book-and-cried-my-way-through-reading-this-book-because-my-mother-yelled-at-me-to-finish-the-book-so-i-would-get-through-my-english-class list.I do not recommend this book. It was boring and such a random and pointless excuse to write a book. A good history lesson I guess, but i'm not one for non-fiction anywho. Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World remains a forbidden domain to which i never want to enter into again.

I was torn as to whether to rate this 2 or 3 stars. The main point of the book is that you need to take responsibility for yourself, and it has some important points about gender stereotypes. It also has information about the involvement of the black community in the rodeo and in the western settlement. All of that is great. The issue is that the book is a fairly easy reading level, about 3rd or 4th grade, and yet some of the content is much too mature. There is a story within the story that the main character Justin is reading. It relates violence by whites against blacks (which is honest, and that's not my issue), but it contains a detail about a man's hands being cut off and placed in his wife's lap which is far too graphic for some children. The book also uses the n- word. As a teacher, I can't imagine including this in my independent reading library because there are white children who are ignorant of the implications of this word and I don't believe they should be casually exposed to it in a book without any discussion of the seriousness of its use.

Do You like book Justin And The Best Biscuits In The World (1990)?

This book centers on a young boy, Justin, who lost his father at a young age and is left living with his mother and two older sisters. The only male figure, and as mentioned his favorite person, in Justin's life is his grandfather. Justin has the opportunity to stay with his grandfather and help out at his ranch. Over this course of time, Justin realizes all the things he hated doing at home because he thought of them as "woman's work" were rightly a man's work as well. I would use this book in my future classroom mainly to discuss responsibility.

Justin, who lives with two sisters and his mother, has a very negative attitude toward cooking and all forms of housework, which he considers "women's work." His attitude is changed by spending a week at his grandfather's ranch, where he sees his grandfather's skill at these tasks. He also discovers an old family logbook and learns about his family's history after the Civil War, when they moved West to escape from the racism of the post-Reconstruction American South. Includes information about historical Black Cowboys and the Black Rodeo-- an exciting and little-known part of American history.

Following is the 2nd of 2 reviews from my son (as promised by me, so he'll stop reading over my shoulder and go to sleep - you naughty boy)!"I like it because biscuits are my favorite food. I haven't got all the way through the book but I'm almost at the ending so I don't know very much about it but they just got to a fair. Justin is only 10 years old but I'm guessing by the name of this book he's gonna make the best biscuits in the world later in the book and he's prbably gonna enter them in the food contest".
