Jones finally gets the right pet when her grandparents bring back fish from their fishing outing. She brings the fish to school on a dog leash, and her class is impressed. Instructional Information: A great teaching idea for this book could be within the subject of science. Junie B. Jones puts an earth worm and other creatures into a jar in the book, so it might be fun to have a classroom expedition out to a field to find different organisms that live in the dirt. Students could practice making tables on their paper, which could list the animal that they find, along with the conditions that they found the creature living in (dirt, water, etc.). Contextual Information: The themes of this book are pets, manners, and proper conduct. This book is more geared toward females since the main character is a little girl. Also, I feel that girls would like this book because they can relate the things that Junie B. gets herself into. It was pet day at school, and Junie B. Jones was faced with a dilemma - no dogs allowed. A dog was all Junie B. Jones had, and her parents were not buying it as an excuse for her to get a new pet. So Junie B. Jones was put with a challenge - what will she come to school with, worms, a jar of ants, maybe a stinky smelly fish. This book can be use to induce the week you do show and tell to a class room. Students can either bring in what they want to show to the class or they could bring a picture of something like a pet or something to big for the class room. Once show and tell is over they could all take pictures with their show and tell and write something short about why it is special to them.

This is another hilarious classic about the wonderful Junie B. In this book Mrs tells her students that pet day is around the corner and their class will be celebrating it and all of the students in room nine begin to cheer. The only thing is that Mrs said that if your pet is a cat or dog you cant bring your animal in and you have to bring a picture. Junie B is crushed because she really wanted to bring her dog. When Junie B got home from school that day she talked with Grandma Miller about what animal she could bring but they came up with nothing. Grandma gave Junie B an earthworm as her pet but Junie B. was not happy. Later that day, Junie B. added some other creatures to the jar that the worm was in but then she had to let them go because all the animals in the jar were dying. Later that day her grandpa and grandma came back from fishing and they brought back a huge fish. Junie B. decided that would be her pet so she pulled the fish out of the container and put him on her dog’s leash. The book ends with Junie B. bringing a fish stick to class as her pet and she wins an award from Mrs. For having the most well-behaved pet!! Very cute! I would read this to a first grade class. I recommend this book to all future first grade teachers.
