About book Joni & Ken: An Untold Love Story (2013)
$2.99Ever since I first heard about Joni, I have been intrigued because it isn't often that I get to read about another woman who lives with quadriplegia, but I just wish there was more depth to her story than what I continue to read in books. She says she is only human, but when I read her words, every other paragraph is Scripture, and while I appreciate and admire the tremendous faith she has in God, I'm always left wanting something more than St. Joni.This is not a typical story by any means, and when I was younger I really resented her because although we are both quadriplegic, that is about all that we have in common. People expected me to draw with my mouth just because they read that she did. I don't have that artistic ability and never did! And of course when she got married, I am sure that many people thought this was the norm, but nothing could be further from the truth.I appreciated hearing bits and pieces from Ken, her husband, but this book barely scratches the surface of what they have been through together. Yes, I use the word "they" because even though she was well known and famous before she married him, he really became the wind beneath her wings. She never chose her life but Ken did, and while it was never easy for him, I almost admire him more.I struggled on my rating but could only give this a 3 although at times I thought it was only going to get a 2. I just need more depth and development about real people living real lives. I really enjoyed this book. I actually listened to the audiobook, which I liked especially towards the end when Joni and Ken spoke. I am a single woman, so I didn't find this book useful for a relationship I am currently in, but I did however find it to be inspirational and very encouraging in my singleness. It has helped me know more of what to look for in a spouse, and it also opened my eyes to the more realistic side of marriage. Granted, not every person faces the difficulties Joni and Ken do, but their attitude towards challenges was a huge take away for me. It taught me about the selflessness needed to love someone day in day out, which I believe to be a useful lesson for any person. I could listen to this book over and over. I highly suggest it.
