About book Joni And Ken: An Untold Love Story (2013)
Joni and Ken's story gave me a glimpse into the lives of two people who have become known throughout the world for equally humbling reasons: Joni because of her tragic, though not fatal, diving accident which brought her to a different calling than anything she ever expected. Ken became known because he fell in love with Joni and married her despite the challenges which lay in store for them as a couple.It was engaging and, sometimes, heart-wrenching to watch this couple interact through the written word, having problems typical couples face, in addition to the plethora of problems they encountered because of quadriplegia and its complications.At the end, tears of joy filled my eyes because of yet another confirmation that God still answers prayer, that He turns trials into triumphs and continues to provide rainbows as a promise that tomorrow will be a better day. "A modest little book about marriage", Joni describes the book. I would agree. It is simple and direct. Not much emphasis on literary device or presentation. But it holds succinct glimpses into an amazing story only God could write and no one would volunteer for a role in! Joni suffers unimaginable pain and discomfort but It seems that maybe Ken, who chose to spend his life serving Joni, suffers more pain though of a different kind as he cares for his beloved wife.I think I would have liked this better if it had been told from the 1st person perspective, alternating between Joni and Ken. My favorite part of the book was the conclusion which was a personal note from Joni and Ken. But in truth, I am encouraged by everything I have read by or about this couple because they faithfully point the reader back to the faithfulness of Christ, of His loyal steadfast love for His own. They are candid about their struggles and pains and always give reference to the sustaining power that is outside them, not from within.
