This is the lowest rating I have ever given to a Goddard book. He is normally a great story teller, with a talent for unexpected twists. The only thing that surprised me about this one was the last three words: "To be continued." If I had known all along that this was the first part of a series I might not have been surprised by how slow it was. For a novel whose hero had been a pilot it took a very long time to take-off, indeed, for me it never really left the runway. I doubt I'll be bothering with the next installment. Engrossing in its own way, after a seemingly unpromising start but then picks up pace to very well lay out the post-WWI millieu, especially the peace talks in Paris. Presents a raft of subplots and a veritable college of red herrings before most are resolved most satisfactorily towards the end and the stage is convincingly laid for the next installment... Some characters drawn very well especially the Brazillian diplomat, the British and the Japanese policeman, and the American aide of the purveyor of information. Look forward to the next one..
