About book In Praise Of Stay-At-Home Moms [With Earbuds] (1997)

I found this in one of the boxes of books people gave me to fill up my bookshelves. I was curious. I'm a stay-at-home mom and struggle almost daily with my choice. It's hard! Whenever I was having one of those "on-the-cusp-of-insanity" days I picked up this book and read a couple of chapters. It made me feel better. It put things back into perspective and, like the title says, praises me. Who doesn't want praise? It made me feel better. If, however, you are a working mom who doesn't want to feel VERY guilty about not staying home with your kids, I wouldn't suggest this book for you. Dr. Laura is harsh. Her opinions on gender roles can be considered a little on the extreme side but if her suggestions are taken in general then a lot of good can come from them. Here is a quote towards the back of the book that I will likely remember during my future "on-the-cusp" days..."How can I be happy with a kid with diarrhea? you may ask. Easy. Realize how wonderful it is for your child that you are there to keep her clean and warm, calm and loved, cared about and healed. The joy is not in the illness, of course; the joy is in the caretaking--how special and safe you've made your children feel, just by being you...and there with them."Thanks for the confidence boost, Dr. Laura. There were parts of this book that I enjoyed but then there were parts that I found very irritating. A lot of "assumptions" were made and not a lot of sound research based information was given. I felt like it was more based on one person's feelings about being a SAHM then a vast majority. I did like the fact that she emphasizes the importance of being a SAHM on our children but I just wish there was more research to back it up.

Do You like book In Praise Of Stay-At-Home Moms [With Earbuds] (1997)?

Meh, this was a Dr. Laura rant over and over again. Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands is better.

I enjoyed it. Certainly not a book everyone would appreciate, but it gave me a needed pick-me-up.

The first book I purchased when I found out I was pregnant.
