About book In Praise Of Stay-at-Home Moms (1997)

Thanks, Dr. Laura, for again helping me figure out my feelings about life's big choices! This book is perfect for someone who is debating whether or not to stay at home or to work. I think anyone who at all is leaning towards staying at home would be happier making that choice after reading this book. It reminded me of all the things I do each day at home with my little baby while making our house a home. Basically she argues that there is no such thing as "quality" time with kids unless you have the "quantity." A lot of taking care of kids is mundane and repetitive. But if you are not there for the monotony, then you won't be there for those joyful moments that perk up out of nowhere. You cannot create those moments on cue and that is why being with your own babe is so important. Dr. Laura does not sugar-coat her feelings, though, and I doubt this would make a stolid working mom change her feelings; it probably just will make her angry. If you're looking to find a way to make your home life more peaceful, I would start with reading "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" or "The Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage." If those start making you happier, then you might be open to going even further with this book. I used to think that working will keep me sane. But after going back to work, then stopped to look after them for 7 months and joined the workforce again, it was my children who kept me sane. They didn't give me ridiculous deadlines, i was treated fairly, i scaffold their learning at my own time and pace and seeing them grow with my own effort is the best payment i can get daily. Now, i am raring to go for my second stab at SAHMhood.
