This was a compelling, intense and passionate romance/mystery. The H/h are complex vividly drawn characters with a believable love story. The story is complex with a number of interesting supporting characters. The main characters must examine their assumptions about how the world works in painful detail as dramatic events unfold including violent death and unexplained deaths. The hero is a policeman who tends to judge quickly. He must learn to see the shades of gray in his choices and the choices of others as well as his own flawed thinking. The heroine allowed herself to be consumed with the desire for revenge and ultimately must see how it darkened her soul and allowed her no joy. As events unfold and the H/h join forces to discover the truth of who did what to whom, the lovers grow closer as each acknowledges their mistakes and begin to think of forgiveness. In time the lovers accept some hard truths about themselves and as they forgive they trust each other more. Like any good mystery all is revealed in the end and the lovers find their HEA. I loved this book and read it without a break. I am happy to give it five stars. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book from a largely disappointing series by the talented Ms. Carlyle. I usually enjoy the historical romances of Ms. Carlyle, but I have found this series average. The paranormal aspects just didn't gel and the romances lack the usual tension and fire of Ms. Carlyle's novels. This book is well worth the read. The romance is thick with sexual tension and passion. Moreover, there is a fantastic murder mystery to follow. Ms. Carlyle had me guessing until the end the identity of the murderer.
Very enjoyable read. I loved the chemistry between Lisette and Royden. The story was great.
