About book Ik Vergeet Je Niet (2010)

Many eons ago I had to do one of those elementary school "country reports" and I was assigned Iceland. I found it awesomely fascinating and still remember a surprisingly bit of what I learned. So I was quite attracted to fiction set in Iceland. And of course, this has the added lure of the whole Scandinavian crime thriller genre, which I have overall but not entirely enjoyed. So, I was looking forward to this but tried to keep my expectations dialed down a bit. I love, and I do mean LOVE, a good old fashioned scary ghost story and this fit the bill. It is good and old fashioned, creepy, not gory, really nothing new here plot wise but it was scary and well written. Perfect for some light October reading. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and almost sold my book group on. Almost but not quite. Plus, the author is Icelandic? Now I'm not only looking for her other books but also the "true story" this is almost based on. I love this book. Part crime thriller and whodunit, and part ghost story, this Icelandic (translated in English to 'I Remember You') is the kind of thing you must read with the lights on. So much atmosphere and tension throughout. It starts with a fairly simple premise. Three friends have bought a rundown old cottage in a remote village called Heskeyri in Iceland's Westfjords. They all become slightly creeped out by the fact that none of the locals will come near the place and that there's an undefinable smell coming from beneath the floorboards or a pile of seashells that keep being left for them in the same spot.Across the fjord in a different town, a psychiatrist is surprised to learn when investigating a local woman's apparent suicide that she was obsessed with his son's disappearance five years ago. And so it begins... A very creepy, psychological thriller on grieving, remembrance and if the past can stay that way. Recommend it.
