About book Hunted By The Others (2010)

I am not the the type of reader that gets annoyed easily. I love a good story, and as long as there are characters that make me feel something positive, I am happy to ignore (for the most part) any leaps of logic/characters that are probably a little to dry/not the most beautiful prose. However this is that one rare book that I had to part ways with very early on. Honestly when I picked it up I thought it would be a fun light read, at least that's the impression I got from the cover and the synopsis. No such luck.. Now this might be silly but it really bugged the hell out of me - at the beginning of the book Shia is supposed to be trying to score an introduction to Royce at his club. Now it was mentioned at the very beginning that this vampire/guy is famous, a character even went on to describe him as the vampire who is always on the telly. So how is it that Shia who is a PI doesn't even recognise him when she sees him?! I love stories about PI's..Veronica Mars might not be a fictional character that I have read about but she set a high high standard that others might find hard to follow but haven't given up trying..take October Daye for example. I love her as a PI..smart, intuitive, ballsy! Shia is a bloody let down on all counts. I still kept going thinking that it might be one of those books that takes character development very seriously and that over time she might become the woman she needs to be. She still might, I gave up way too early to judge that. But there was simply no way in hell that I was finishing the book that tries so hard to deliver funny lines and falls so bad. Not even a small chuckle was uttered throughout the 65% of the book that I completed. This is not even the worst bit. Shia is a bigot. That's all I could of think of throughout the book and it bothered me to no end. It seems a perfectly acceptable reaction to the reality in which sups exist side by side with humans, but it's annoying as hell to read about. I want my characters to be strong and progressive and brave and courageous. If they are afraid I want them to overcome it in a fashion that I can understand. I don't want a Mary Sue but I also don't want to read about a character who is so scared of vampires (who btw have been out for 9 years I believe) that she can barely utter a sentence without shaking like a leaf in one meeting but suddenly is out to go vampire hunting in the next! she wants to make nice with this guy so that she can get insider information but she wears a cross so obvious that he can't help but remark on it? What kind of PI does that? I might not be a PI but even I know that if I want something from someone I should not offend them the first chance I get. That is the main point of my rant I guess.. I disliked the main character immensely and therefore could not finish this book. I am just sorry that I cannot say with any honesty that I do not DNF books cause this book broke a very long long record. Hunted by the Others was a great read that captures your attention from the very beginning and never lets go. This book is a great urban fantasy full of vampires, werewolves, mages, and a human heroine that kicks butt. Shiarra is very well developed throughout the book and really comes into her own by the book's climax. While she gets involved in this case because of money problems, this case takes on a life of its own as her loved ones are threatened, she makes new friends, and even promises to save some Others. The book is full of many twists and turns making it a great read. I am definitely looking forward to reading Shiarra's next adventure. If you are looking for a great urban fantasy, then Hunted by the Others is the book for you.
