About book Enlevée (2013)

Read for Fun!Overall Rating: 4.25Story Rating: 4.00Character Rating: 4.50First thought when finished: The ending was fast paced, super fun, and I am glad that I have book 3 ready to go!What I Loved: I love when an author builds on the book before by flushing out her characters a little more. Jess does a good job of not overwhelming you with a recap from the last book (in UF this tends to be a problem) but giving you a sense of the characters if you start here. I love that we learn more about Royce, see the White Hats, and learn more Shia. It isn't an info dump but more of a learn more as they learn more about each other kind of thing. The pacing at the end was fast/furious but it worked awesome for the story. What I Liked: The side characters and the bad guy were fantastically written in this story. There are some I want to know more about (mouse) and I am hoping that one grows on me (elf). I have faith though that these new characters will be flushed out more in the books to come. What made me go huh? Not enough of Chaz! I say that because I want to like him but so far to me he is an arrogant pain in the neck. I am usually team werewolf so I want him to sweep me off my feet. Hasn't happened yet but that is just a personal thing LOL Vampire lovers are probably swooning over Royce. Final Thought: Book 3 is in my hands and going to be started very soon! Once again Shiarra is bleating about how terrible the vampires are, but once again we never actually see anything to back this up. Sure Max is bad, but who is she to damn a whole race because of one person? She complains that Royce is manipulative and a user, but all I can see are numerous examples of her playing him along; Shiarra is the one who phones him up and asks for help - several times, so why must she whine about getting involved in his business again? Then she has to wait as he is in a meeting, and she whines because he is dropping what he's doing and coming running. At one point Royce calls her out on her behaviour towards him, so she plays nice, but her thoughts remain pretty much the same toward him and vampires in general. To me this shows how she in manipulative and is a user, plus it also shows how she has failed to progress and learn from the events of the previous book. And then how does she repay him? By getting involved with The White Hats - a violent anti-other group, who especially want to kill him. This is another example of how she uses people; she doesn't like The White Hats either, she is again just playing them along, to use them for her needs. All of this means that I just don't understand why Royce is said to be in love with Shiarra. He must really hate himself. She is frustrated by how humans treat the Others. Well, as long as the Others includes her werewolf boyfriend and mage friend, as she acts the same way as anyone else about the vampires and doesn't see anything wrong with it. Yes, this is fiction so it shouldn't annoy me, but I see it as discriminating against someone because of their race, sexuality, disability etcTAKEN BY THE OTHERS should be a fast read, but it took me a week to finish as I could only force myself to read two or three chapters at a time. The basic plot is a simple revenge driven storyline, that the author tries to pad out by tossing another love interest injust doesn't gel for me; we're meant to see vampires as being evil, but we don't see anything to back these views up. And, to top it all off, we're meant to believe that Royce has fallen hard for Shiarra. I just can't see what the author thinks I should be seeing. It's actually a shame, as the author can write, and she has a few good ideas and solid secondary characters, so I have no idea how she has managed to come up with such a unlikeable heroine, who I want to see fail; e.g. during a scene where Shiarra's running from some bad guys, I was hoping that they'd catch her. And hurt her. A lot.
