3.5One time I truly wish for half stars—not quite four but not three either. Have rounded up because of its Aussie setting.I didn't hold out a lot of hope for this actually, but the book was believable in its depiction of that part of Australia and setting, IMO. Some small snippets of colloquial dialogue that didn't leave me cringing by being over done—thank you, Ariel. Enjoyable leads and supporting characters. Would have loved to get into Macklin's head but am happy with how it was handled. I'll probably give book two a go at some point soon. 3.75 StarsCaine Neiheisel leaves his dead-end job in Philadelphia for an outback adventure when his mother inherits her uncle's sheep station, Lang Downs, in New South Wales, Australia. Caine's stutter thankfully isn't a problem but his inexperience and sexual preference are. Caine, however, is determined to honor his uncle's vision and legacy by ensuring the ranch's success. No stranger to hard work and persistence, Caine slowly but surely wins the ranch hands over. Unfortunately Macklin Armstrong, the foreman, should be Caine's biggest ally but his moodiness and surly attitude call that into question. In the end, Caine and Macklin will have to fight prejudice and sabotage to gain their much-desired HEA.I enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and the story was robust. Everything is told from Caine's POV and he's a worthy narrator. I liked learning about the outback through his eyes and seeing his gumption and determination first hand. Macklin took some getting used to but I loved him in the end. The extended cast of characters were pleasant additions as well. There was a good amount of sexy, smexy scenes ... yum!One gripe: the resolution of the mystery of the saboteur. It was resolved too quickly and none too neatly for my tastes. I would've like to have watched it unfold rather than just being told of its resolution. Plus we aren't even told who, exactly, did it or why! Bottom line: a wonderful cowboy tale from down under.
