I enjoy historical novels, and a little romance is nice, and I'm glad that the whole book wasn't focused solely on that. Times were so different back then, that it's nice to visit that time and place and think about what our ancestors endured. It was a little preachy in places for my liking, but it didn't take away from the book in my opinion. I would say it's a solid 3 1/2 stars, not a 4 but more than a 3. I wanted to love this book. It had been recommended to me by many people and I'd been eyeing it on amazon for quite a few months. It went on sale the other day, so I snapped it up. It was well written. It was an engaging story. But I really needed quite a few more light hearted moments. From beginning to end, it was high tension and stress and worry. There were a couple of cute moments with the budding romance, but even those were never truly relaxed. By the end of it, I ended up skimming through the climax, because I just needed to get to the happy. If the rest of it hadn't been so intense, I likely would have enjoyed the high tension climax. Overall a good read, but it left me wanting more.Content: Clean.
