About book Heart (2014)

This book was so different than the other books I've read by Garrett Leigh, its about a boy who is an Irish gypsy. Dex was sold into slavery when he was only 13, he barely remembers having anyone care about him, or treat him well. When he finds Seb's wallet all that changes. Seb cant forget about him, and starts to get curious about where he works and lives. He soon realizes that Dex lives on the street and is a beach vendor. They have one night together and the next day Dex is gone. Neither of them forget it, and after about 2 years when Seb shows up to work at a friends restaurant, he's shocked to find Dex working there. Dex's story is heartbreaking, he's treated so badly by the people that he feels a need to protect. He witnesses a crime and he's constantly afraid of them finding him and dragging him back to the life he left. Seb is so patient with him, and is willing to do whatever Dex wants to make him happy and feel safe. Sadly thts not enough and Dex ends up in trouble. Good characters, I would love to read more about them. I don't know how to put into words how I am feeling at the moment....but wow.....just WTF did I just read??? I am not usually one to enter into stories of angst, violence and just raw emotions, I admit I like things a little lighter, not quite unicorns and rainbows, but I want to be entertained, not tormented and clenching my jaw, with my heart about to break out of my chest with the hopelessness of a situation, it was a place I was uncomfortably sat in.....held hostage and I had to hold on for the ride. This story got me on marmite and hula-hoops and then refused refuge until the last page.....it was one mad roller-coaster of a ride and I loved every minute of it - but it's not a ride I want to take again, it scared the bejesus out of me and once is enough......which doesn't bode well for me if I want to read further books by the author!!!It finished on a happy-for-now, it would've been nice to have had an epilogue, a little into their future, hopefully settled into their new venture, but I was content that all was well in Dex-Seb universe. I loved the last sentence, but the one that stood out in the book for me was when Seb looked at Dex after his ordeal and on a visit to the countryside, simply beautiful - "a man who smiled like the sun" Highly recommended.
