About book Grace, Gold & Glory: My Leap Of Faith (2012)

Grace, Gold, and Glory This book is all about the life of Gabby Douglas. You would think she would have an easy life because she won the Olympics, but it was not an easy life. Having to train so many hours is hard. When Gabby her was born her family was very poor. They had to live in a van the first few years she was alive because of that. Her parents got in a divorce and she doesn’t really sees her dad a lot. Once Gabby’s mom made enough money they rented a town house. After that Gabby’s family started to notice that she has talent. At age six she was put in gymnastics. One day she was watching the Olympics and she saw a guy named coach Chow. She told her mom she wanted to work with him. After a while Gabby moved to Iowa to train with coach Chow. She trained with him for two years and then went to the Olympics. Of course Gabby Douglas is the main character of this book. She is a gymnast that goes to the Olympics and wins a gold medal. She never gives up, and always keeps trying. That’s how she makes it to the top. She never stops trying even if she does get homesick. Another main character is Gabby’s mom. Without her none of Gabby’s achievements would have been possible. Gabby’s mom always believes in Gabby. Gabby used to live in a van but her mom made enough money to rent a house and let Gabby live her dream. While taking care of three other children. The setting of this book is a lot of different places. I don’t think it’s possible to just have one setting in your life. That would mean you wouldn’t be able to explore the world. Some of the settings of this book are Iowa, Virginia Beach, Gabby’s home, and Gabby’s gyms that she trains at. The conflict of this book is that right when she moves to Iowa and starts to train Gabby was thinking about quitting gymnastics. She loved gymnastics she was just really homesick. Gabby couldn’t focus during training and coach Chow could tell. Coach Chow would always have her family that she was living with in Iowa come pick her up. Gabby’s mom came to Iowa to visit her. When she came to visit her she told her mom that she was really homesick and thinking about quitting gymnastics. Her mom could not believe it because she was done so much for Gabby in gymnastics. Her mom thought she just wanted to quit so she could come home and not be homesick. Gabby’s mom flew back home so Gabby wouldn’t quit. My opinion on this book is that it is a very good book. It’s one of those books that when you lay your eyes on it you can’t take them off. It is an interesting book. I love the detail in this book. I recommend this book because it is an easy read. You will love this book. If you like gymnastics I would read this book. It is all about a life of a gymnast. If I were you I would read this book. After I read Shawn Johnson's book, I decided to read Gabby's, but overall was a little disappointed. Some of the writing seemed to be all over the place and there were stories put in that were come rely irrelevant. It would have been better if she had talked more about her experiences at the Olympics, as far as friends she had made along the way and things like that. I guess I was hoping it was going to be more like Johnson's book and it really wasn't. Still interesting to read about the challenges she faced getting to the Olympics.
