About book Glory B. (2000)

Enjoyable read. Would make a good read aloud and discussion of civil rights.BOOK TALK: It's HOT. And the pool in the town of Hanging Moss, Mississippi, has been closed. They say it's for repairs but Glory Hemphill learns that's not the real reason. The truth is some of the town leaders don't want people who they don't like swimming in the same water with their kids. Glory figures this will the worst summer and her 4th of July birthday party will be a bust. Glory's misery only gets worse as tensions rise and threats are made against Glory and her friends. Glory's town has closed its pool for repairs over the summer, but the people know it's not really for repairs. It's because they don't want African Americans swimming in their pool. Freedom Workers are coming to town from the north and fighting for equality and Glory's small, southern town doesn't want these changes that would allow African Americans to share its restaurants, pools, and libraries. I like reading about this time in history. It makes me so mad that people opposed equality! Glory gets mad too and shares a piece of her mind.
