About book Gipsy Song: Le Choix De Kenzie (2014)

At first I found the book a little strange to read. I absolutely cannot picture my mother packing me up and sending me off to Spain against my will. But I fell in love with Kenzie right away. She’s a teenage girl who right away knows that she wants to have the baby, and is willing to go against her mother for it. I saw this quiet determination in her, a strength that I found absolutely inspiring.I’ve never been to Spain, but Kephart paints a beautiful picture of the place that Kenzie was staying. I am so impressed with her writing – it’s almost like poetry that drips off the page, yet flows into a story. One detail that she repeatedly emphasizes is the heat of Spain. Yet she doesn’t just say it’s hot. Kephart is not repetitive. She finds different ways to describe the heat as it wraps itself around Kenzie. While the information is the same – that it’s hot – I never once felt that I was reading the same thing again. Each description of it was unique and masterfully creative.I also found that the characters are also incredibly well done. On the surface, they are quite simple. Estela, who teaches Kenzie to cook. The gypsies, who sing and dance. Esteban and his horse. Yet Kenzie learns more about each of them, and this simple exterior disappears to show complex people with histories – and futures. I found the whole book was like this: simple at first, but as Kenzie learns more, so did I.Small Damages is one of those stories that grows on you so slowly that you’ll find yourself loving it far before you know why. The language was absolutely enthralling, and I found myself re-reading sentences for the pure enjoyment of them. As Spain and the people around her grew on Kenzie, they grew on me, and the ending was absolutely perfect. Reading this book was simply a wonderful experience. Ever since I heard about this book I was hooked. What could be better than this sweet romantic YA story set in Spain? But shortly after I started reading it I realized how wrong I was. It isn't about our main character, Kenzie, looking for her one true love, it is more about her looking for herself and finding out what she wants for a change.Kenzie is a senior at high school and she's pregnant. But her mother can't stand the thought of everybody finding out so she sent Kenzie to Spain to give birth and give her baby for an adoption. After she arrives to Seville, she meets people she's supposed to stay at for next few months. And she meets my favorite character, Estela. Even though Estela is just a simple village woman she has a big heart. She teaches Kenzie how to cook but more importantly she teaches her how to live life to the fullest without any regrets. The other thing I love about this book is its format. It's a one long letter from Kenzie to her unborn baby so it's more descriptive. She writes what she sees and how she feels about it. But the thing that threw me off a little was Kephart's writing style. When I found out that the book is a lyrical prose I was worried because I've never been a big fan of poetry and lyrical writing. So I was pleasantly surprised that I understood most of the story without any problem. However, I still don't understand why some dialogues are put into quotation marks and others are not. It always took me a while to realize that those characters are talking to each other…But it was still a great read and I would recommend it to anyone who's in the mood for some light reading with deeper meaning.
