About book Free Four - Tobias Tells The Divergent Story (2013)
Hooray Four has his voice back! I just loved these stories, and honestly after the disaster that was Allegiant (which even i thought was really terrible, and ive been a massive fan of this series for years) where despite writing chapters from Four's POV, Roth somehow entirely lost his identity.. It was really nice and very much needed to read be able to re-enter this world that Roth so brilliantly built and finally get to see Four's insights into his past with him telling the story. Gone is the petulant man-child of Allegiant, and in his place we get back the Four we fell in love in the first book. We also get to see the development and the back stories of other characters who due to Tris's POV we barely got the scrape the surface of in the main books. Im really really glad Roth released these, they really are teh perfect way to tie up the series:) Very neat to hear Four's voice about the same things already seen by Tris, spun by his own personal experiences- how he has found a place of strength among the Dauntless, especially during his initiation process and in the training room. Was odd to see the exact same dialogue from the first book but now interspersed differently with Fours' thoughts and judgments (observations of Eric, the other initiates and particularly Tris). Was a cool privilege for the reader to better understand his rationale for the knife-throwing at Tris (grim courtesy of Eric) as well as his feelings of curiosity and interest towards her. Thought the ending was simple but good.

It was great getting four's point of view. I hope she writes these for each of the books.

Divergent vignette, but from Tobias's perspective.
