About book Falling To Heaven: The Surprising Path To Happiness (2000)

Without being proud or condemning, this book quietly, and simply turns upside down many of the tenants of self-help; showing that self-interest, pride, and the ilk, lead away from happiness. Even the chapter titles let us know that simple answers won't suffice. For example: Chapter 2: "Truth in Contradiction" is followed by Chapter 3: "The Divine Paradox." And thus it goes, many of our up's turn out to be downs, This book makes very clear how backward and self-centered much of our thinking is. It also points the way to a happier life by being complete honest, truly humble, etc.. I really enjoy Ferrell's writing and insights. When I attended Time Out for Women last year, he was one of my favorite speakers. As with all his books, I know that I will continue to understand them at a deeper level with each re-reading.Here are some of my favorite insights:1) I loved exploring the divine paradox of up vs. down by looking at the vision of the Tree of Life.2) The analogy of holes in your boat (which he also told at TOFW) has really put sinning in perspective. It doesn't matter what size of holes you have in your boat, the point is that we all have holes and are sinking! What does it matter if we're sinking faster or slower than our neighbor?!?3) It was important for me to examine signs of "up-ness" in my life to see where I need to make changes.4) Reading about his dogs, Oakley and Oreo, completely tore at my heart-strings. I almost cried when Oakley jumped in the water to save Oreo. What can I say? I'm an animal-lover. I loved the lessons I learned from Oakley including to view others with hope and gratitude.5) I loved the chapter "Living in a Confessing Way." I thought it was very profound and a lesson I'll take to heart when I make comments during Sunday School or Relief Society lessons.
