Fake Kate by David Wailing.Fake Kate is a great thrill ride and has more twists than a pot-noodle. It has the adrenalin rush of a big dipper. It's so easy to get lost in Fake Kate and imagine yourself jumping up and down, listening to the rhythm of the bass throbbing through your stomach; lasers flashing as the people around you go crazy-ape. I was there and I demand the T shirt!This is one of those stories that should have a viral warning on the cover - You won't want to put it down, it's contagious. I remember being half way through the story and thinking … Wow! How is he going to top this? Can this story get any better? It does. It continues to keep you guessing until the last page. I'm Sure I've Met These People...Two sisters, almost identical in looks, but divided by taste… Or so it seems.Personality wise Kate and Belinda have nothing in common, yet their physical similarity binds them, even while apart.Belinda sets out to find Kate, after her mysterious disappearance, by donning her clothes, hairstyle and even body-art and dating her list of suitors from an online agency, aided by Kate’s friends, who appear to have trouble remembering who she really is. They’re not the only ones…With Intriguing plot twists and deft characterization, the novel exemplifies the author’s quest for the meaning of identity. Hidden personae, nuanced motivations, outright lies, they’re all here.Sensible Belinda is the not-so-ugly duckling become swan... with hair extensions. Racy Kate’s London is lovingly portrayed, full of cafes, cool shops and frenetic night-life. With a teeming cast of city lads, club owners, DJs, dreadlocked, pierced, tattooed, studded, and high heeled fashionistas, it’s a fun and scary place.I’m so sure I’ve met these people. I had to peer at the author’s photo to check it wasn’t someone I knew. With a pseudonym, obviously.And just how does he know so much about women’s clothing? If it weren’t for the too-short heels, I’d wonder if a woman wrote it.I actually enjoyed the convoluted changes in the last half. As for the ending, once disbelief has been suspended till the last couple of pages, how can a twist be too twisted?The mark of a good writer is to make even the most bizarre seem familiar and believable. David Wailing has done just that.I can’t put my finger on exactly how I know these people, but I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled with his next book
