About book Everything's Perfect When You're A Liar (2013)
I think that sentence above makes it pretty clear that I knew nothing about Kelly Oxford going into this, other than that a friend of mine had listened to this on eBook and liked it. Said friend is equally obsessed with Leo DiCaprio, so of course I got to that story in the middle of the night, trying to read by book light without waking my husband. I wasn't really crazy about this, but it was a light start to my summer reading and it did make me laugh out loud here and there (although more so at her parenting ones than the misspent youth -- the Disney one is amazing). To be honest, I have no idea who this person is. I assumed she was maybe a comedian or actress writing a memoir, only to find out she's a writer of inter net fame. I actually grabbed the book because I liked the typography on the cover. Then I opened the book up and she's talking to her kids and I thought, "ugh this book is going to be boring," but it took me by total surprise. These were some funny essays. A few of them had me laughing out loud. Cliche? Yes, but I truly snorted reading about this crazy Canadian organizing an elementary school production of Star Wars or witnessing her speaking telepathically with David Copperfileld. I'd compare this book to one of my favorite memoirs "Eating My Feelings," by Mark Brennan Rosenberg. Bravo, Kelly Oxford!
