I am so sad it is over but still so glad it happened. I can shamelessly admit I grew attached to each and every Digger. I ended up viewing Amy as a strong & brilliant girl who I would be happy to call a friend. I admired all the strong female relationships in this series & felt even more proud when the boys evolved into men who I could respect. I initially didn't know what I could gain from reading a book about Ivy League secret societies.. To answer that I gained a lot of insight into a world I knew nothing about, truthfully. Amy & her friends taught me people grow and change, college is a learning experience to be embraced. I found Amy to be normal & headstrong & willing to let a wonderful guy walk out of her life even though she wanted him to stay. She wanted him to be happy, she was realistic & dealt so well with each new catastrophe. I fully believe she worked hard & deserved all the happiness in the world. Poe grew so much as a character he just captivated me & I was simply itching to see his name pop up on a new page. I even love his creepy Voldemort snake. He was so misunderstood even by Amy for the longest time. I was completely frustrated by it, he had a slow but meaningful development. While reading he made me so mad, but I had to hold out hope & it paid off thank God. Lydia, Jenny,Demetria,Clarissa,Michelle & even Mara at times made the book more welcoming & warm. I felt like I was a part of their close bond. Friendship is such a cool thing & it played such a pivotal role in this series, it made me love the books more. The mystery & romance is all good but the strong long lasting bond among the girls & all the Digger's made me smile. We may not understand it at times, but it was a lovely thing to experience. They all made mistakes & grew into worthwhile people, no one in the books came across as perfect they all had flaws. The flaws made them better at least in my eyes, the character development was magical. I can look back on what I read and see where they evolved. I did miss Malcolm in this book, if I had to complain. The rain/robe/buyyoupizza scene totally made up for anything I could find to whine about, it was genius.. I am still grinning ear to ear thinking about it. I am going to push this series on a lot of people for the rest of the summer, I can see it happening. A chick lit love story for girls who are too old for teen romance novels. Other love stories (Sarah Dessen, for example) seem a bit soporific by comparison. What I like about this series is that there is just enough fictional pizzazz to keep you hooked, while still being somewhat believable and realistic. For example, the way the characters disagree and misunderstand each other is very compelling. Peterfreund avoids settling into idealistic niches and seems to have thought twice about the opinions and reactions of each individual. The characters (and there are quite a few) all possess vivid personalities and are often at odds with each other. This was one of the aspects of the series that I appreciated the most.
