I really like this book. It is a very simple book, but fun at the same time. It is about cats and the cats are in a book. That is it. The plot is very simple, but it still engages the reader with the words that the author uses and is just amazing. The pages are not just boring normal pages, but interactive to draw even the most reluctant reader in. At least that is how I feel. The author is also the illustrator so using both her words and her drawing, she invites the reader to play with the cats in the book. There are three cats and the whole book really invites you to play with them with playful language and language that is directly speaking to the reader. It is similar to "We are in a Book" by Morel Willems I believe it is. By writing sentences like "The cats aren't on this page either. They're on the next page. They'd love to play with you . They're very friendly," the author really adds a layer of surprise and anticipation. Where are the cats is what readers are asking. The students I read this with are so excited to turn the page to figure out where the cats are and what they are doing. While reading this to students, I would comment on the use of anticipation and interactive language when writing something so show that you can draw a person using only your words. I know...this is an older book, but I used it in Toddler Storytime this morning (again) and wanted to post here how much I love this book.I use it as a direct conversation with the toddlers and they have to "help" me turn the pages by counting to three. Sometimes it is a regular count, sometimes fast (when our friends need our help!), and sometimes quietly. When the furries need to be dried, we do a 1-2-3 and then blow as we turn the page.Loads of interactive fun and a chance for me to do some pretty silly voices.
