The writing in this book is solid, and I can see how the story would appeal to many people, however I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. At the end of the previous book, the last in the Darkyn series, a really interesting element was revealed about one of the characters. I thought, "Cool!" and I ran off to reserve Shadowlight from the library. I realize the two series are related, yet separate, but the character I was interested in reading more about wasn't even in this book. Also, while I was glad to see one of the couples from the Darkyn series, they played a very small role and honestly, they were my least favorite couple (Lucan and Sam) from the Darkyn novels. Another problem for me was that I was expecting a good vampire book, and there is extremely limited vampire (Darkyn) content in Shadowlight. From the cover, you'd think it was a romance novel, but there also wasn't very much of that until the last few pages. So, overall, while I do think Viehl is a talented writer and I've enjoyed all of her books so far, this one just wasn't for me and it's safe to say I won't be continuing with the rest of the Kyndred series. Really enjoyed. I have not read the Darkyn series yet (I will after finishing this series) but it is not necessary. You get enough of the history to understand what is going on. Lots of action - this book could be classed as an action romance. I liked the main character - Jessa had already rebuilt her life once and was now being faced with doing it again. The only thing I would have like more closure on is what happened to the emplyees of the business she built. Jessa had helped them all out of bad situations and I would have liked to have known a little more about their end of the situation.
