In that way, this book felt a little like those movies that are made with Oscar hopes in mind. All in all, a very solid book for Middle Grade readers. Everything is well done and the story's themes are strong. It's a fast read and I enjoyed it...it just wasn't all that unique or original.
For November's Book Club - I loved the opening of this book - a great example of voice. I'm not convinced that the rest of the book lived up to that opening, but I'm still impressed for a first novel. I was actually intrigued quite a lot by the older sister character - can't think of the last time I saw someone explore the idea of using one's beauty quite so blatantly in a book for middle readers. I liked this enough to look up several more of Frances O'Roark Dowell's books, so I guess that says something.

I'm beginning to like Frances O'Roark Dowell more and more and more. Loved Shooting the Moon and The Kind of Friends We Used to Be, and now I've finally met Dovey Coe. Wish I'd done it earlier. Smart, tough, quick-tempered, sassy, and fiercely loyal, Dovey is a girl with moxie. Dowell has captured her voice so clearly, from the mountain dialect to the spunky attitude. Although some townspeople are prejudiced against the Coes simply because they're mountain folk, the integrity of the family shines in their interaction with each other. This is a good, hard-working, honest family, though some will never realize that because of their prejudices.Some will wonder about Dovey's account of the events surrounding Parnell's death--is she really innocent? She did hate Parnell, after all. Others will firmly believe Dovey is telling the truth--she's just that kind of girl, honest and tough. But if she didn't kill Parnell Caraway, then who did? Although I "solved" the mystery early on, I think it's just about right for students. Enough clues there to figure out who and why, if they're really looking, but still enough of a mystery to keep them reading.

I didn't really find this book very interesting, but the young audience it is intended for might. If you want a heroine with a strong voice, I find "Homecoming" much better (although not set in the same time period or geographical area). The isssue of sibling rivalry (somewhat downplayed in this story but still there) is much clearer in "Belle Prater's Boy." Plot development is slow: the first chapter tells you that Dovey has been charged with murder, but then most of the book goes by before the murder occurs. At the end, Dovey says that she must admit that she needs Amos as much as he needs her, but this theme has not been fully or believably developed. As far as a girl on trial for her life, I find "Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" more fascinating. For myself, I think there are better written books to teach to my students than this. However, young people who haven't read a lot might enjoy the feisty character and the clue that absolves her of murder.
