About book Dois Rios (2013)

Really liked this book. I finished it like every English major does in school. Sitting down at 8:30 and not getting up at night till it's done.Great symbolism, and themes. It is about family, race, father/motherhood, and how the draft of the Vietnam war can affect men as they head to college.Good book. It is a bit slow getting going. And the back and forth chapters of the present to the past do begin to feel forced. Worth reading. Slow paced story of widower with daughter who can't seem to move on with his life. His daughter was born 12 years before when another car deliberately pushed his car over a cliff. his wife was killed but the baby was saved. Additionally, Harper thinks the person who did this was a black carnie in town for the fair. He and his friends decide to scare the guy but it ends mysteriously. Fast forward 12 years and Harper is still mourning his wife Betsy and can't seem to get on with his life. A train derailment in the Vermont town leaves a young pregnant black girl on his doorstep he takes her in temporarily out of delayed guilt. There is an unexpected turn of events late in the story.
