This is about a little girl named Gert. She loves playing in the mud and dirt, maybe a little too much. One day however, it begins to rain and she turns into a plant. Even as she is growing into a tree, her parents still love her and take care of her. This book is loaded with vocabulary words. A theme to this book is about the unconditional love and how we should love people no matter what and help our loved ones get through hard times. Another theme is about not being afraid to be who you are. Teachers could have a show and tell day where the kids bring something to class that help define who they are to show that they should never be ashamed of who they are and should be proud of themselves. Hilarious story about a girl who ate dirt and then sprouted roots and leaves to become a plant. The story is good for older kids because it has a lot of big vocabulary words. The theme is unconditional love in this whimsical story. Could be a lesson about getting context for vocabulary words. Could be a story about theme having students guess the theme of the story. A really fun story but would use with 3-5 because of the complexity of theme and the vocab.
