About book Deze Hoed Is Niet Van Mij (2011)

Grant CooperReily RiemersmaThis story is a mystery that was written for children about a little fish that steals a hat from a bigger fish. As the pages progress, the illustrations present characteristics of foreshadowing. The fish is trying to make his way to safety, where the plants are thick and he can hide, but he does not realize the bigger fish is following him. When he thinks everything is all good he realizes that he has a big problem ahead of him. This is a great book to read to young kids that will teach them to not steal. This diverse topic does a very good job of teaching kids that stealing is a very bad thing and kids should know not to do it. Also the illustrations of the book were really well done. The illustrations bring out the funniness of the book. This is Not My Hat by John Klassen is the story of silly and slightly devious small fish decides to steal a hat from a very large fish while he is sleeping. He starts to swim off believing that he will never be found once he reaches the very tall plants that are very close together. During the book the fish is very conscious that who he is doing wrong and that stealing is wrong but continues to keep swimming believing that other will vouch for him not saying where he went. Although the reader can be led to believe that the has gotten away, little do they know the determination of the big fish in getting his hat back. All of the illustrations look like printed tissue paper. This gives a texture to the illustrations which helps with the setting of the story because it is underwater where everything is textured. The text is block words on a white page while the images are on a black page show good and evil of the big fish contrasted with the little fish. Throughout the book there is lots of blank and negative space making the two fishes the main focuses and the clear antagonists and protagonists. All of the illustrations are very animated which adds to the humor of the situation. Throughout the book the reader is aware of fishes conscious and that he knows what he is doing is wrong and they are also aware of what he does not know. This puts the power into the readers hands because they are all knowing. Although there is not a whole lot of text in the book there is one page where the plants cover all of the page and the reader cannot see what is going on. This allows them to infer what is going on in the confrontation and personalize the story to their liking. The pictures in this book can stand out without the words while still allowing the reader to be able to infer what happened. Overall the reader can learn that nothing good can come from stealing. This book is a wonderful way to get children laughing and keep them on their toes.

A small fish has stolen a big fish's hat, and he's not ashamed about it. He is concerned about his getaway, though, and this book follows his journey to an area filled with seaweed, where he'll be safe from the big fish. As the small fish tells the audience how unconcerned he is, the illustrations show the big fish waking up and pursuing him, making the fate of the small fish quite clear. It's great as an anticipatory story and I love how the fish is so honest about the hat he stole. Though the little fish assures us that the big fish will not wake up, will not follow him, and will not know which way he went, the illustrations tell a different story. The text and illustrations work together perfectly to tell this story, complementing each other in a manner rarely seen in picture books.I like how the background is black instead of the usual white. It really shows the depth of the ocean and portrays the setting well. The black underwater provides the perfect background for the mostly gray-toned fish and seaweed while the monochromatic palette strips the artwork down to essential, yet exquisite design. This book will be accessible to all readers.

This is not my Hat is a tale about a fish who stole a hat from another fish. The audience is younger readers. This book focuses on expressing some sort of bullying. In this story the moral is that if you do something bad there is always someone watching and you will get caught. In this book the fish that catches the fish that stole the hat is larger than him. From what I got out of the story, it is saying that size does not matter of the person; anyone can bully someone else. This story is short and to the point and is perfect for a child who has a short attention span. The illustrations are eye appealing. I also noticed that this story uses a lot of abstract illustrations. This can be good for the readers because they can decide what the story is about and use their imagination. In a classroom this book can be brought to teach the awareness of bullying.
