About book Denying Yourself (2013)

I liked the story, but something about it just didn't click with me. I liked Shane and Matt but I wanted more from them, I felt no connection to them. You only saw parts of them but didn't really get to know them. It wasn't a typical shifter story where they mate and get claimed and it's all happy ever after. They had to fight for each other and to be together. Overall it was a good story, just felt like it was missing something. The idea was there and I can appreciate that but the way it was written was a bit ridiculous. Shane is gay and seems to be fine with that aspect but what he isn't fine with is his werewolf. So he abuses alcohol to control his werewolf urges. He is also in love with his best friend Matt who is definitely not okay with being gay. After graduation Shane begs Matt to come way with him to live his dream of having his own restaurant. So Matt does and Shane and Matt live together and begin a tentative relationship together. However, Matt cannot accept his feelings towards Shane which pushes Shane to drink more and the more he drinks the more their relationship explodes. So Shane finally leaves - running away as he cannot control his wolf and he cannot tell Matt. It's an interesting idea because it shows two kids dealing with two issues. As I said the idea is good and could have been done well - but it everything was on the surface, there was no real depth and there was the sexual element that really dampened the real issues being dealt with.An idea that was good but wasn't treated to its potential.
