2.5 Stars.Deep Blue was an interesting read, but it just didn't capture my attention and send me into gushing episodes whilst I was reading. The first hundred pages was very good, I enjoyed it, even though it took a long time just to get to one key plot point, but I liked what was developing. I then continued on, and it was eighty pages later when I realized that, to me anyway, not much had happened and I was a little bored. I really liked the authors writing style, I think that is why I was able to finish it, because it's very pleasing to read, but I have the sense that this first book is too much of a prologue, like all the super, heart-stopping exciting stuff is going to happen in the next three books. The characters were good, and I liked Sera, but I had my issues with her, at the end, not having an epic "I can do this, I am a leader, we're going to smite this evil and look good whilst we do" moment, but it didn't happen. I liked Neela too, but the other four girls are still way under developed, so I hope we see more of them in the next books. I will certainly be reading on, because, seriously, look at that cover, and the next one, Rogue Wave, is even prettier, but this just wasn't the book for me. Hmmmm. I'm kinda between a 3.5 and a 4 on this one. I really enjoyed the story, but didn't love flipping back and forth between the story and the glossary. There are quite a few made up mermaid words and various languages that are a lot to wade through at the beginning. After I made it through the first several chapters I got used to this, but didn't really enjoy that part of the story. I'd like to read it without all the extra made up terms. if you can make it through that, you'll enjoy the story.

I completely, utterly LOVED this book. (Though,It could never compare to Harry Potter) I think it was amazing. I went through this faze where I loved mermaids...a lot, and my friend recommended this book. After I finished it I kept bugging her about when the next one was coming out. Sure enough when Rogue Wave (the second book) came out, bought it as soon as it hit the shelves. I did the same with the others. I was devastated when I finished the series.I recommended this to anyone who loves mermaids, and is looking for good read!
