The same as 'Death By Volcano'I love many of Mr. Peacock’s work but this one just wasn’t the same. I was hoping for a fun adventure on the Big Island but it didn’t deliver. Most of the fun characters are fun and entertaining, but the main character, Janet, and her plight just left a bad taste in my mouth that I couldn’t overcome, and because her actions are the starting point for the whole book it’s too hard to overlook it. Based on the title, Death by Facebook, I envisioned something about...well, death by Facebook. Someone wasting away, starving to death, because they couldn't get off Facebook, or maybe a Facebook killer. Facebook is mentioned in the first few pages...and then never again. Death by Facebook is a very poorly chosen title for this book, and made me, as a reader, feel like I'd been misled. As far as the story itself, I found it rather choppy. Numerous characters that all seemed to be unrelated, as though I was reading several different books at once. Some characters were introduced and then abandoned (Jimmy's mother and her boyfriend/friend, for example), and their roles seemed to be ones that should be there. Jimmy's mother, for example, didn't seem to serve any real purpose except maybe as proof that he had a mother, and her behavior never really seemed to fit with how she should be behaving in the given circumstances. She should have been more developed, with her learning what happened, her reaction to it, etc. Other characters did seem to be more central to the story, but they weren't developed all that well. Many of them seemed rather flat and one-dimensional. Then there were a few characters that seemed completely pointless. Wally's son, the headlamp guys, and at least one of the front desk clerks come to mind for this. They seemed to have no purpose other than just as filler - as though the author had set a number of characters that needed to be in the book, and had empty spaces to fill.There were glimmers of a good story here and there, so I believe the author is probably pretty good in general, but this book is not a shining example of his work.
