About book De Wonderbaarlijke Reis Van De Fakir Die Vastzat In Een IKEA-kast (2013)

Read in English. My girlfriend bought this book to improve her English, and decided to go with this one for the title. The title indeed seems tempting and promising, in line with the whimsical titles which are "in" right now with books such as The Girl Who Saved The King Of Sweden, The 100 Year Old Who Climbed Out Of The Window And Disappeared, and so on. Apparently written on the author's cell phone while working in a toll booth, which is probably another gimmicky reason why this book sells all right. The book tells the story of an Indian fakir who travels to France in order to buy a bed of nails at Ikea. However, he gets trapped in a closet (didn't see that one coming, did ya?) and that sets off a series of unexpected events, during which the fakir meets some interesting companions, makes a few enemies and goes through a bit of personal development. It is indeed a light, fun and easy read with some nice situations, some interesting personal relations and even some serious notes about illegal immigration and trafficking. Although these topics are sometimes portrayed very harshly in comparison with the overall light tone of the book. Some of the jokes are very well done, while others are corny and repetitive (the how do you pronounce the name gag for example). All in all, this book is recommended if you are looking for a lightweight, humorous novel with a little bit of a serious undertone in it. If you are looking for a more literary comedic book, skip this one, because it will come across a little bit too simplistic and forced. Gostei!
