The Girl in the Gatehouse by Julie KlassenI enjoyed this nice, light old fashioned romance story that was perfect for my family camping holiday. It was also great that I could read it and not worry if my boys looked over my shoulder while we all read on the beach! I liked the added little mystery that needed solving as it added interest to the typical romance story. I enjoyed the historical quotes from the time period at the beginning of each chapter. Wonderful writing with lots of interesting facts about the 1800s: the making of quill pens, poorhouses, anonymous writers, food, etc. My favorite part of the book happens less than 100 pages from the end. An analogy between one of Aesop's Fables and the essence of this story is played out. It is a shocking and brilliant scene. I loved it! Who I hated was Hugh and what he gets away with. Ugh! He is such a devious man. I liked what Mariah did with her third novel. It just felt right.Great regency era read for 15 & up. There isn't any swearing, but there are a few fist/sword fighting scenes. Also, you will read of kisses shared and find out what happens to an unwed Lady who's virtue has been morally compromised.
Do You like book De Jongedame In Het Poorthuis (2012)?
I can never figure out the endings of Klassen's novels. It's refreshing.
