About book Das Unerhörte Leben Des Alex Woods Oder Warum Das Universum Keinen Plan Hat (2014)
A rare meteorite struck Alex Woods when he was ten years old, leaving scars and marking him for an extraordinary future. The son of a fortune teller, bookish, and an easy target for bullies, Alex hasn't had the easiest childhood. But when he meets curmudgeonly widower Mr. Peterson, he finds an unlikely friend. Someone who teaches him that that you only get one shot at life. That you have to make it count. Less than 30 pages into this book I wanted to message all my reader friends and tell them they absolutely have to read this book. It was unexpected and delightful and provocative and depressing and kind of hilarious all rolled into one. It's a book about a young adult without being a YA book (hallelujah). The main character, Alex Woods, is a precocious kid (the book follows him from age 9 to 17) who doesn't fit in any social circles but strikes up a friendship with a retired military vet. Even though he is completely socially unaware and doesn't respond to things on an emotional level (think Sheldon from Big Bang Theory) I fell in love with him almost instantly. His character is impeccably written-- so much so that I could foresee his reactions to plot situations before reading them. This would make a fantastic book club read (though beware of the language... Alex himself doesn't curse but there are other characters who think the "F" word is a useful adjective) and would provide some great discussion. In fact, if any of my friends read this please tag me in your review, I'd love to know what you think.
